Iodine deficiency disorders

Iodine Deficiency Disorders (IDD) stem from a lack of iodine in the body. IDD is one of the most common human diseases and causes developmental delays and mental disabilities. Without proper amounts of iodine, the thyroid cannot produce the hormones for proper brain development. Haiti is the only country in the western hemisphere without iodine standards.

Treatment

Iodine Deficiency Disorders are one of the most prevalent, yet preventable causes of brain damage. By adding iodine into the diet, countries can stop IDD. One of the easiest ways to do this? Iodizing salt. Because salt is in most things people eat, iodized salt is a simple and non-intrusive way of providing enough iodine to end IDD.
