Bon Sel Dayiti is the only food-grade, iodized, and fortified salt produced in Haiti. Established as a project of the University of Notre Dame Haiti Program, our primary goal is to eliminate lymphatic filariasis (LF) by 2020 and aid in reducing iodine deficiency disorders (IDD).

Our Vision

To reach the entire Haitian population with fortified salt, either single fortified for the elimination of IDD or double fortified for the elimination of IDD and LF.

Our mission

To use Bon Sel Dayiti to reduce the disease burden caused by lymphatic filariasis and iodine deficiency disorders.

Our story

Salt is a staple in the world’s diet. Fortifying salt is a worldwide method to combat disease and encourage well being while still reaching large populations with ease. Reverend Thomas Streit, C.S.C. began researching the effectiveness of double-fortified salt in the early 2000’s. After a successful trial in Miton, a Haitian commune, production of BSD+ was started in 2006 at the Ministry of Health facility in Port au Prince. A second facility with expanded capabilities and capacities was commissioned in 2014.
